First, publish two photos with the same amount of SEO work to the same site and see how they rank. Be sure to make image resolution the only variable as much as possible. To test weighting (to see if resolution is the dominating factor), post another pair of images. The high resolution image should have little to no other SEO work (no alt, no tags, etc..) while the smaller image should have this work done. Make sure the resolution difference is extreme, but the lower resolution image should be high enough to avoid a substandard low resolution cutoff (if one exists). Therefore I would suggest a good quality image (lower resolution) versus an extremely high resolution image.

Experiments such as this should be able to determine how resolution affects image ranking by comparing the search results.
